Flower Care

Flower Care for Fresh Flowers

Let's help the flowers have a long life!

The following is a list of suggestions to help you care for your fresh flowers.

  • As soon as you receive your flowers, place all the bunches / bouquets / or single roses in buckets with cool and fresh water (if you want leave the carton around the buds) for at least 1 hour before using the flowers (flowers need time to hydrate).
  • Store your flowers in a cool place, away from sunlight or other heat sources (never use freezers, or home refrigerators) while the flowers / roses are hydrating.
  • Once you are ready to arrange your roses /flowers, open the carton and cut the stems diagonally, at least 1 inch, with a sharp knife. (Do not let the cut edge dry up before placing the flower into the container with water).
  • Always use a clean vase.
  • Always use cool clean and fresh water to fill the vase.
  • Dissolve the “Flower Food” powder, if included in the box, in the water (please follow instructions on the back of the flower food package) Please note that some products do not come with flower food, only those mentioned on product description.
  • Remove all the leaves that are below the water level, this will help to reduce the build up of bacteria. (Leaves left underwater will rot and bacteria will build up, shortening the life of the flowers).
  • Remove the outside petals of roses (if you want).
  • It is recommended to change the water of the vase once every two days.
  • Keep your flowers away from sunlight or other heat sources; the cooler the temperature, the slower the flowers will open.

Enjoy your Flowers!

Care and Handling – ROSES

Upon arrival of your premium Roses, uncover the box. It is normal for your flowers to appear dehydrated and thirsty.  Their appearance will change once they have hydrated.  Follow our care and handling tips to insure full hydration and a long shelf life for your enjoyment.

Each bunch/bouquet is wrapped and packaged within the patented Peek-A-Bloom sleeve (corrugated wrapper) utilized to protect them during shipping.   DO NOT REMOVE THIS PROTECTIVE PACKAGING until you have completed the following instructions.

Processing your roses

  1. Thoroughly cleanse then fill a hydrating bucket half way with fresh clean water.
  2. Without removing the corrugated wrapper, cut stems 1 to 2 inches in a 45-degree angle.
  3. Place flowers in hydrating buckets and allow them to drink water for at least 4 hours - the longer the better!  It is essential NOT TO REMOVE THE PROTECTIVE PACKAGING while flowers are hydrating, it acts as a guide to keep your roses straight!.
  4. Keep your roses in a cool area always away from heating elements and direct sunlight.
  5. After the hydration period, remove wrapper and begin to arrange.   Some blooms may have damaged, blackened or marked petals.  These outer petals are called “Guard Petals” naturally found in rose blooms.  Eliminate these guard petals (3-4 outer petals) before placing them in your arrangement.  Keep your roses or arrangement from the direct exposure to the sun.
  6. Arrange your roses in a vase with a minimum of 6 inches of water.  Remove the foliage that falls below the water line.  Mix the package of flower food with the water.
  7. Place the blooms in a cool room in a container or vase of your choice.
  8. To prolong the vase life of your roses, recut the stems ½ inch, clean the vase and replace its water every three days.

Alstroemerias

Follow the Care Guidelines Below:

Upon arrival of your premium alstroemeria, uncover the box. It is normal for your flowers to appear dehydrated and thirsty.  Their appearance will change once they have hydrated.  Follow our care and handling tips to insure full hydration and a long shelf life for your enjoyment.

  1. Cut stems 1 inch on a 45-degree angle.  Always cut fresh flowers with a sharp knife. Scissors or a dull knife can crush the stem of a flower and reduce the amount of water that can reach the bloom. When you are cutting the stem place the knife on an angle and slice through the stem.  This creates a point at the end of the stem, which maximizes the amount of water that can reach the bloom.  It is always most beneficial to cut flowers under water so that the hydration process is smooth.
  2. Arrange your blooms in a vase with a minimum of 6 inches of water.  Mix the package of flower food with the water.
  3. Place the blooms in a cool room in a container or vase of your choice.
  4. To prolong the vase life of your blooms, recut the stems ½ inch, clean the vase and replace its water every three days.
  5. Never place your flowers where there might be a warm draft, such as, the top of a refrigerator or beside a heating vent. Fresh flowers last longer when they are at room temperature or lower.

Flower Care – Baby's Breath or Fillers

Our flowers are shipped directly from our farms to your doorstep. Before shipping your flowers, we prepare them for their journey with proper hydration methods. If your flowers appear sleepy and thirsty after their journey it is absolutely NORMALFollow these simple steps to ensure your flowers have the proper care.

1. When your boxes arrive, it is important that you get your flowers in water as quickly as possible. Open your boxes and remove any protective packaging, such as foam or paper.

2. Gather buckets or containers to hold the flowers. Ensure your buckets or containers are very clean. We recommend rinsing them with warm water.

3. Fill the containers with at least 4 inches of fresh, cold water. If flower food is available, follow the package directions for adding it to the water.

4. Cut any straps and remove flowers from the box. Remove any rubber bands or plastic sleeves securing flower bunches together.

5. Remove any foliage that would fall below the waterline. Leaves below the waterline may cause bacteria to form, shortening the life of your flowers.

6. Using sharp flower shears or scissors, cut stems diagonally under cool, running water. Cut about an inch off of each stem.

7. Immediately after cutting the stem, place the flower in the prepared water.  Ensure that you have sufficient room in each bucket for the number of stems you will be storing. Do not overcrowd your containers. Overcrowding may damage stems and blooms and effect the blooming process.

8. Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, flowers may take up to 12 hours to properly hydrate. Periodically check the water levels, flowers drink a lot of water when they first arrive and the water may need to be refilled.

9. Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, drafts or extreme temperatures. Flowers should be stored in a cool, dry area until ready to use.

10. Change water every 24 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Flower Care – Hydrangeas

It is normal for your flowers to appear dehydrated and thirsty.  Carefully follow our care and handling tips to insure full hydration and a long shelf life for your enjoyment. Please have someone available to receive and process the bulk boxes on the delivery date.

Hydrangeas are water-sensitive flowers.  When you receive your hydrangeas you will note that each stem has a small water bag and each bloom is individually sleeved.

  1. Carefully remove the plastic sleeve and proceed to remove each water bag.
  2. Cut the stem ½ inch at a 90-degree angle WHILE HOLDING THE STEMS UNDERNEATH WATER.
  3. Briefly submerge the whole stem and flower under very clean water (This can be done in a bathtub if you have many flowers at once).
  4. Keep your hydrangeas in a clean receptacle with fresh water in very cool place until you are ready to make your flower arrangements.
  5. Once you are ready to arrange your hydrangeas, prepare your vase with clean cold water and flower food.
  6. Recut each stem diagonally to desired length and arrange in a vase with fresh cold water (You may add ice cubes to your water).  Make sure to keep plenty of water in the containers; hydrangeas drink a large amount of water.  The water level should cover the whole length of the stem.
  7. Re-cut the stems and change the water every 3 days or as needed.  This will prolong the vase life of your hydrangea and you can expect your blooms to last an average of 7-12 days.

If you find dark fading petals in the hydrangeas simply remove them.  It is normal to find several noticeably damaged petals or foliage.  These can easily be removed without damaging the hydrangea.
